Publications, such as The Economist, have been mentioning OpenStreetMap in articles that deal with geography and maps. However, few have had a dedicated article about it, and even fewer of them got it right (no, OpenStreetMap is not about communism 🙂 ).

It’s nice to see one of the big German periodicals having an Article (in German), that explains OpenStreetMap and gets it about right. I guess part of the credit for this goes to Hanno Böck, whom the journalists accompanied.

UPDATE:German “Bildzeitung”, the biggest (not best) German daily has a report on OpenStreetMap too.

We are on the night train to Ljubljana now. Previously, when we had finished office work, I bought “Grand Theft Auto 4” for our office XBox. And boy, that is a cool game. Unfortunately ten people were killed due to our driving style, and Stefan managed to enter the subway on the railway tracks before being shot by the police. That game is so much more fun than Halo3, which overwhelms my motoric capabilities

Stefan had read a review on the nighttrain to Ljubljana and we were expecting some crappy old train. And a crappy old train it is, but for one coach which is new. Guess, who is in that new coach which has nice two person compartments :-). Rrrright, we lie on our linen sheets, drink a beer and read newspaper. We have plenty of space, a washing bassin, electric plugs, LED lamps, working air conditioning, toothbrush, shoe polish, water and croissants.

I do envy my colleagues who had two be 2 hours early at the airport today, to get a noisy prop machine, to a rural small airport, from which one has to find some transport means to the city, which is far away. Or don’t i envy them? I forget.

All in all, this conference trip certainly starts out nice and we have plenty of time tomorrow to get to know Ljubljana until the program starts. Stefan will meet his friend Julia and I will find an open WLAN to post this.

I think academics have the responsibility to distribute their papers wisely. Therefore, I have decided that from now on all my published papers will be rated under this self-censoring scheme by default. So if you are no swearing 18 year old and drug consuming hand-waving communist, stay away from my articles….

You know how the mobile carriers charge you a couple cents to SMS a few characters’ worth of text over their network? When you add it up, you’re paying about a zillion bucks a meg for that traffic — seriously! A space scientist from Leicester has calculated that SMS data is four times more expensive than receiving data from the Hubble space telescope.

Am Donnerstag haben wir ein kulturelles Event in Dübendorf besucht: Jazz in Duebi. Für 30 Franken gab es Pasta à Discretion, danach ein Konzert der Band ‘Tuliaisia‘ mit Piano (Vera Kappeler) und einer schwedischen Sängerin (Marianne Racine), die schwedische Volkslieder sang.
Es war eine merkwürdige Atmosphäre, sehr familiar und unprofessionel (aber auf eine liebenswürdige Art und Weise), und eine sehr lokale Dübendorfer Veranstaltung (wir wurden bestimmt drei mal gefragt, ob wir denn auch aus Dübi kämen, anscheinend sind wir noch nicht gut integriert).Einen Haken hatte die Sache allerdings, direkt neben dem Saal war ein Festzelt aufgebaut, in dem die Dübendorfer Blasmusik am nächsten Tag Konzert hatte. Und die hatten ihre 3-stündige Generalprobe direkt neben unserem Saal. Eine 40-köpfige Blaskapelle ist dann doch ganz schön laut, verglichen mit einem Piano und einer Sängerin. Zum Glück hat die es ganz locker genommen und ein Witze darüber gemacht.

Als ich bei Wolfram in Hannover war, haben wir im Conrad Electronnic ein Doppelset gekauft: 30 Euro für ein ferngesteuertes Flugzeug und einen ferngesteuerten Helikopter. Wolfram bekam den Helokopter und ich das Flugzeug. Es ist superbillig gemacht, eine Fernsteuerung mit 2 Hebeln und einem Ladekabel. Ein Flugzeug aus so einer Art hartem Styropor mit einem eingebauten Akku, der 15 Minuten hält und dann wieder für 20 Minuten an der Fernsteuerung aufgeladen werden muss. Ein Ding, bei dem es nicht schade ist wenn es kaputt geht.

Es macht aber tierisch Spass, dass Ding zu fliegen. Es ist so langsam und wendig, dass man es problemlos in unserem Garten fliegen lassen kann (unsere Küche hat sich allerdings als ungenügend herausgestellt). Es ist sehr windempfindlich, und wir mussten es schon aus zwei Bäumen und von einem Scheunendach runterholen. (Einmal haben wir zwei Stöcke mit Wolframs Schnürsenkel zusammengebunden. Zweimal hat uns nur Nachbars lange Leiter gerettet.) Bisher erweist es sich als unkaputtbar. Toi, toi, toi…
