Clicking the screen

Karim Lakhani writes about the Boston workshop

Interestingly, every presenter, when they wanted to go to the next slide would point the clicker at the giant white screen and the press the forward button. BUT WAIT!! Its just a giant white screen – made up of some toxic plactic material. There are NO electronics there. The wireless reciever for the clicker was hidden behind my laptop. Good thing – this gizmo had a omni directinal antenna and could pick up clicks from where ever.

However it is interesting to think that most intelligent people click towards the screen instead of towards the laptop. I guess we have been so conditioned by TV and the remote that we just click the object which is displaying the image and not think about where the guts of it our.

Hehe, very sharp observation and so very true. I guess watching TV might explain it, on the other hand it shows that even todays intelligent people are not able to comprehend and cope with’s todays complex technology anymore.

Moving posts from one blog to another?

Mmmh, I need to move all the blog entries in this blog belonging to the category ‘research’ to the University blog. I wonder if anybody knows such a tool or script which could achieve this. Unfortunately I am not familiar with the RSS format or I would try to write one myself. If anybody knows something which could achieve this please drop me a line.

Phillie is nice

After my first days in Philadelphia, I have to say that I like the city. And I have to admit that I love American food: donuts, bagels, Philadelphia cheese steak sandwich, coffee to go in paper mugs… I certainly won’t loose weight during my stay (sorry, couldn’t upload some pictures of me eating fat dripping cheese steak sandwiches from here). I also saw “The Incredibe Hulk” in the movies. Not a must see, but better than I expected. The scene transitions and and camera work is excellent and pretty creative.
In a few hours my flight back to Europe starts: about 10 hours of flight and three hours in Boston when switching planes… That’s going to be fun.

St.Gallen is nice

After my first year in St.Gallen/ Switzerland I have to say that I like the city. And I have to admit that I like Swiss food: good cheese, gipfli, coffe to gu in paper mugs at the station…I certainly wont’t loose weight during my stay. The flat is really cool and tidy now, even considering that the prices for the use of the washing machine have gone up several 100percent…

Boston is nice

After my first day in Cambridge/Boston, I have to say that I like the city. And I have to admit that I love American food: donuts, bagels, taccos, coffee to go in paper mugs… I certainly won’t loose weight during my stay. The hotel (Hyatt Regency) is really cool, especially when considering that we auctioned the room for 60USD per night for a double room via priceline.

Boston

Tomorrow, I fly to Boston to take part at the open source conference hosted by MIT (opensource.mit.edu) and Harvard Business School. It’s going to be fun and nice to meet all the other guys doing research on Open source as well. I’m really looking forward to it…

More Ashcroft devilisms

Warblogging.com (UPDATE: link defunct) reports that Attorney General John Ashcroft today asked Congress for the power to indefinitely hold suspected terrorists and to seek the death penalty for any terrorist act, including “material support” to a terrorist group. A crime that can consist of as little as a donation to a “terrorist charity” at a mosque.

This is so totally beyond all common sense, I can hardly understand how they get away with it.

Almut grandma’s funeral

This weekend I’ll be away to the funeral of my girl friend Almut’s grandma. Although she was 91 years old and had to be nursed full-time, this is a sad event. On the other hand, I will get to know the full (large!) family.

“Sweden” – what’s on your mind?

Tourist attractions in Sweden

Tourist attractions in Sweden

This year during the summer holiday I will spend two weeks in Sweden. But what does the official swedish tourist website (UPDATE: link defunct) show you on their pages? Landscapes? museums?

NO, a picture of a swedisch girl which focuses her, err, middle part of the body. Interesting to see what tourist center officials judge as most valuable in this country, isn’t it? 🙂

UPDATE: Unfortunately, the article is no longer online and I lost the pic which i had saved locally.

UPDATE 2009-07-07: Fortunately the great waybackmachine had an archive of the site which I could screenshot.
