Linux Suspend2Ram sucks

Hail for the holy grail of open source software that is called Linux. It has solved all of my computer problems. NOT. There is one thing that has never worked for me on any of the boxes I installed Linux on so far.

Seriously, it is no problem to get computers to hibernate or suspend. But waking them up again has never ever really worked for me. And that is on pretty standard hardware. Either the display remains black (or shows interesting patterns that would rather hint to the intake of hallucinogenic medication). Or mouse and keyboard stop working. Or, it wakes up immediately after going to sleep. Or all USB ports stop working. …

I don’t care about this on a server with 400 days of uptime, but on a laptop and even my desktop this is just plain unusable.

Happy new year

I am back from my Christmas/New Year holiday. It was great to do some skiing again and living at my Grandmother’s place, who is 93 years and lives in a house with 2,000m2 of garden on her own. We spent the time with my family, my uncle and my cousins and it was a good, relaxing time-out. I also tried out my new cross-country skis and am happy to say that this was fun too (as long as there are no steep downward hills, at least).

Unfortunately my colleague Stefan has probably broken his tailbone when sledging. Get well soon, Stefan.
