  • Getting WiFi rtl8723be to work in Debian

    After crashing my previous laptop, I bought a HP 15-ba055ng that contains a rtl8723be Wifi card. However, under Linux the connection would become instable after a short while and refuse to reconnect. I needed to do a series of things to fix this:

    1. Apparently only 1 antenna is connected to the card while the card is configured to use a different antenna slot, leading to an abysmal signal. A new parameter was introduced in kernen 4.0.7 (or so) that lets on select the antenna in the kernel module.
      Create a file /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf and enter

      options rtl8723be ant_sel 1

      (the default is 0). This let to a much better signal reception (as visible by doing iwlist scanning). But it still did not help, connection got refused after a while.

    2. Some other options need to be changed to make it work. Most people say that disabling sleep parameter fwlps (FW control power save, default 1) helped. So, that would be adding fwlps=0 to the above line. I did that.In addition some claim, that setting ips=0 or msi=1 has helped them to get a better reception. Try it, I use ips=0, but msi=1 seemed not necessary, so that my current options look like this: options rtl8723be ant_sel=1 ips=0 fwlps=0
    3. Some claim that windows fasstboot mode needs to be disabled in order to make WiFi work reliably. (in case you dualboot) However, I have not tried that yet, nor found it necessary.

    All this is on a Debian Jessie system. On a final note: I find it pretty sad that a laptop sold in 2016 has no 5Ghz capabilities. I did not even fact-check that before my purchase as it did not occur to me that this could be an issue.

  • Openstreetmap in a train

    Wow, Openstreetmap has come a long way since I started contributing 10 years ago. Now Hamburg’s HVV maps are based on it and German railway’s in-train portal displays the train’s position on an OSM map. Way to go!

  • Non-dolce gusto

    In unserem Ferienhaus war eine “Espresso”maschine vom Type Nestlé Dolce Gusto. Also haben wir uns einige der grossen Plastikkapseln besorgt (Grande, Espresso, Café au lait). Die Maschine selber war von Krups. Der erste Eindruck unseres ersten Café au lait: Brühe des Grauens!!!

    Ehrlich, Filterkaffee von Dunkin Donuts schmeckt besser, und das ist der einzige Kaffee den ich bisher nicht trinken konnte. Ein kurzer Blick auf die Zutatenliste zeigt

    Vollmilchpulver mit löslichem Kaffe befindet sich in den klobigen Plastikkapselnmit Plastikfoliendeckel, die beim Brühen unangenehm weich und labberig werden (was da wohl sonst noch so rauskommt?). Wenn ich Pulverkaffee trinken will, dann brauche ich keine Espressomaschine. Und es gibt Fertigcappucchinopulver das gar nicht mal übel schmeckt, dieses war deutlich drei Klassen schlechter als der Fertigcappucchino von Aldi.

    Als nächstes ein Test von Grande und Espresso, es handelt sich hier immerhin NICHT um löslichen Kaffee, aber puuuh. Grande schmeckt widerlich, lediglich Espresso ist trinkbar, allerdings schmecken die Espressosticks von Nestlé besser und kosten ähnlich viel (16 Portionen für 5€ sind jetzt kein Schnäppchen).

    DAS von der Firma die Nespresso macht? Die Kapseln die auf Amazon durchaus durchweg gute Bewertungen erfahren? Ich weiss nicht ob ich an mir und meinem Geschmack zweifeln soll, oder ob das System ganz grosser Mist ist.

    P.S. ein Test aus einer anderen Packung schmeckte genauso widerlich, wir scheinen also nicht einfach eine schlechte Packung erwischt zu haben.

    Unser guter alter Zafira Diesel hat also eine Abgasreinigung die “vollumfänglich” funktioniert wenn (Quellen: Monitor vom 12.05.2016; Spiegel.de):

    • es zwischen 20-30° Aussentemperatur hat, und
    • der Motor nicht über 2400 Umdrehungen macht und
    • nicht schneller als 145km/h fährt, und
    • man nicht über 850 Höhenmeter ist (Umgebungsluftdruck > 915 Millibar).

    Opel hat eine Stellungnahme veröffentlicht in der sie “bekräftigt […] keine Software ein[zu]setzen, die feststellt, ob ein Auto einem Abgastest unterzogen wird.” Und: “Unsere Software war nie darauf ausgelegt, zu täuschen oder zu betrügen.” Weaselwords pur. Well done, Opel, well done (beziehungsweise GM).

    Durch Softwareanalysen wurde entdeckt dass die Autos die Abgase erst ab einer Außentemperatur von 17° zu reinigen beginnen. Die Durchschnitsstemperaturen 2015 in Hamburg war 10,1°. Lediglich im Juli und August hatten wir also ein paar Chancen auf Abgasreinigung.

    P.S. Tests des Kraftfahrt-Bundesamtes/Bundesverkehrsministeriums haben das nicht herausgefunden, die Deutsche Umwelthilfe musste da noch mal nachhelfen. Der Monitorbeitrag vom 12.05.2016 (Minuten 1:00-7:30) ist sehr interessant.
    P.P.S. Unter anderem auch der Astra soll betroffen sein.

  • Howto extract PDF pages on Windows and Linux

    mutool is great. You can install it portable as regular user on Windows, for instance. If you need to extract a few pages from a long pdf you can use mutool clean. However by default, this will create a pdf that is as big as the original input file. To compact the resulting file, make use of the -g options. So this works great to extract pages 19-20:

    mutool clean -ggg  input.pdf output.pdf 19,20

  • On the importance of Open Data

    Back in 2006 or so, I discovered openstreetmap.org, which was a rather obscure and empty do-it-yourself map of the world back then. Which prompted me to join and help out, by mapping and by running the Tiles@Home service for a few years (until the technology could not scale anymore, because so many changes happened simultanously). The importance of available geographical data is pretty obvious by now (hey, Nokia is basically an empty shell with their HERE maps left), and other open data sets are popping up. Some are created by governments (who used public money to create those data sets), and some are created and collected by NGOs.

    One entity has started to collect and curate open data in an area where you would not expect any: contract data between oil companies and governments. A new “for-profit social business” startup, OpenOil.net has started to tackle the task, and has collected hundreds of contracts and visualized the data in a map (yes, it is openstreetmap-based). They also provide an API for querying the data and searching the full contract text. Ever wondered whether your home town is covered by a contract for oil extraction? Find it there!

    I would wager that there are two major difficulties: 1) getting data from non-cooperative states and companies and 2) making enough money to go on. The data set however is truely open and free, you could download it and crunch it yourself material is either in the public domain or provided under the Creative Commons BY-SA 4.0 license.

    Hats off for trying to make a very opaque business transparent. I wish you the best of luck. At some point this data might be just as ubiquitous as openstreetmap data, but for now this is a mostly  unknown “here be dragons” area.
